active highlight set/color

The active highlight set is associated with the active highlight set color, which is the color that is currently in use for highlighting documents in the visualization workspace. On the Highlight Manager, the active highlight set color is identified by its "starburst" background (e.g., Active highlight set color - example). On the Highlight Color Selector, it is preceded by a bullet. Only one highlight set color (out of a maximum of 8) can be the active color at a time. If only one highlight set color has been added to the Highlight Manager, that color is the active color.

See Highlight Manager for how to change the active highlight set color.

cluster label

A keyword assigned to groups of documents by the clustering algorithm. Cluster labels are displayed on the Research Landscape. Compare label.

concept frequency

A percentage (e.g., 25 percent) that indicates the upper limit of frequency of terms used for clustering. Terms that appear in a greater number of documents than the concept frequency limit are considered too common to be significant. Terms that exceed the limit do not appear in the concept cluster and are not considered in determining the position of a document on the Research Landscape.

Note: The adjustment of concept frequency does not affect IPC Codes, which always use a concept term frequency of 100 percent.

The concept frequency value for a project cannot be changed after the project has been visualized. Changing the value in Tools > Preferences affects new visualizations created after the change but does not affect existing visualizations.

contour lines

Isolines on a contour map indicating areas of equivalent content. In STN AnaVist, contour lines enclose areas of equivalent document density.

contour map

A map showing regions of similar content outlined by contour lines.

documents not containing relevant data

A category whose documents lack data relevant to the current analysis. The category can be selected to display in a bar or matrix chart only when documents eligible for the category exist in the answer set.

Exemplary/First Claim

Clustering option that indicates:

  • Where exemplary claims are identified, such as in U.S. grants, all exemplary claims are used.
  • Where exemplary claims are not identified, only the first claim is used.
  • For WPINDEX, all exemplary claims are not used under any circumstances. Instead, the claim for the first patent family member is used.

highlighting

The use of color to identify a group of documents. You can highlight documents in one or more colors. Using multiple colors enables you to compare groups of documents as part of your analysis.

Highlight Manager

Tabular display of all the highlight sets currently available for use in a visualization project. Use the Highlight Manager to control how highlight sets are displayed in STN AnaVist.

highlight set

A group of documents highlighted in a single color. Highlight sets (and their associated colors) are listed on the Highlight Manager, one per row.

histogram

Representation of one-dimensional analysis result that consists of labels and bars. The length of the bar indicates the number of documents associated with the bar relative to the documents associated with the other bars in the histogram.

label

A user-specified text string that can be applied to one or more documents. Label names have a 30-character limit. A document can have multiple labels applied to it. The Labels chart is used to maintain labels. Compare cluster label.

Labels chart

A bar chart listing all the labels that have been created as part of the current visualization project. On the Labels chart you can rename, clear (unapply), or remove labels; you can also create and/or apply labels.

nonpatent literature

When used as a search filter, any document reference from CAplus not classified as a patent.

– O –

other

A category showing all document references not displayed in other categories in the chart. The "other" category is displayed on a bar or matrix chart when the "Merge remaining bars (or rows/columns) at end of chart" check box is selected on the View tab of the Chart Properties dialog box.

patent literature

When used as a search filter, includes all CAplus, USPATFULL, and PCTFULL records, plus additional document references such as research disclosures and IP.com references.

priority application year

When used as a search filter, a 4-digit year selected in this way:

If: Then the priority application year is:

Basic patent reference has a priority application

Year of that priority application

Multiple priority applications exist

Oldest year

Patent reference does not have a priority application

Year of basic patent

project copy

Copy of visualized STN AnaVist project, saved in Shared eXchange format (.shx). The project copy does not contain the project copy itself. Rather, it is a placeholder or token that represents the project residing on the STN AnaVist server.

publication year

When used as a search filter for patent literature, the 4-digit year when the basic patent was published.

Research Landscape

A contour map showing the thematic relationships among the documents in an answer set imported by STN AnaVist. Each document is represented at a single point and is located closer to documents that are more similar to it and farther away from less similar documents.

Technology Indicators

CAS-controlled indexing terms, harmonized across indexing periods. Does not include CAS Registry Numbers. The indexing terms occur in CAplus, USPATFULL and USPAT2.

tooltip

A pop-up textual description of an on-screen STN AnaVist component, caused by hovering the cursor over the component. For example, hovering over the Reset Map button on the Research Landscape displays the tooltip Reset Map.
